At the first Democratic debate of the presidential season, just like at the Republican’s first presidential debate, the issue of marijuana legalization–notably state’s ending cannabis prohibition–came up for discussion where one candidate made clear their support for legalization…another one, still waffling on weed policy.
Republican candidates for president convened second debate tonight in California and a marijuana-related question was asked, four candidates weighed in on the topic, which demonstrated clear policy fissures in the Republican Party on the topic of ending cannabis prohibition, the war on drugs in general and states’ rights.
Fifty-five percent of Americans favor making cannabis legal for adults, according to the findings of a just-released CNN/ORC International survey released late Monday. The percentage is the highest ever reported by the survey, which has been tracking public opinion on the issue since 1973, and marks a 12 percentage point jump in support since the last time pollsters posed the question in 2012.
(CNN) – Despite decades of propaganda from marijuana prohibitionists, a majority of the American public has indeed said “enough” to the policies of cannabis criminalization. And no amount of fear-mongering is going to change this fact. Writing in a just-published report by the Brookings Institute, ”The New Politics of Legalization,” authors E.J. Dionne and William Galston conclude, “In less than a decade, public opinion has shifted dramatically toward support for the legalization of marijuana. … Demographic change and widespread public experience using marijuana imply that opposition to legalization will never again return to […]
CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta has reversed his previous opposition to marijuana law reform and delivered a full throated defense of cannabis’ medical applications in an editorial published this week on CNN. In his own words: Over the last year, I have been working on a new documentary called “Weed.” The title “Weed” may sound cavalier, but the content is not. I traveled around the world to interview medical leaders, experts, growers and patients. I spoke candidly to them, asking tough questions. What I found was stunning. Long before I began […]
I was on a radio show this past weekend debating a prohibitionist who still believes that medical cannabis is little more than a hoax…a ‘camel’s nose under the tent’ to trick the American public into legalizing cannabis for recreational purposes. I’ve heard this individual exclaim numerous times over the years that he would not give cannabis to a loved one who needed it, because, he still clings to the myth that cannabis in its natural form is a ‘dangerous narcotic’…he even claims cannabis is toxic to humans (despite the drug […]
